March 2008 Unethical Websites

Miss Bimbo

The Scoreboard was made aware of several frighteningly unethical sites in March, but the month's winner has to be "missbimbo," a revolting site created by a French entrepreneur who seems to be hell-bent on reinforcing all negative stereotypes about French values. (Next up: "Miss Surrender"?) His website encourages girls as young as 9 to appreciate plastic surgery and dieting as a way to achieve female Nirvana: a perfect figure, popularity, and a rich husband.

The internet game is designed for girls 9 to 16, and has already surpassed 200,000 members worldwide. Their challenge is to optimize the weight, wealth, sexiness, appearance and happiness of their characters, thus creating "the coolest, richest and most famous bimbo in the world." Game players compete against other children for "bimbo dollars," which will finance breast enlargement surgery, face lifts and tummy tucks, diet pills, provocative lingerie and fashionable nightclub outfits.

Not surprisingly, healthcare professionals, parents' groups and organizations representing women suffering from anorexia and bulimia have attacked the website for sending dangerous messages to impressionable children. Of course they are right. The values and objectives promoted on "missbimbo" go far beyond the traditional dress-up and "Dream Date" fantasies of a more innocent age to lethal conditioning by encouraging a warped set of values and life goals that are antithetical to mental, emotional and physical health. Studies are showing that girls as young as 6 are developing body image distortions leading to serious eating disorders. Increasingly, teenaged girls are seeking breast implants, as they aspire to unrealistic standards of beauty put forth by the media.

And here comes "missbimbo" to throw gasoline on the fire! Here are some of the site's "instructions" at various game levels:

Level 7
After you broke up with your boyfriend you went on an eating binge! Now it's time to diet . . . Your target weight is less than 132lbs!

Level 9
Have a nip and tuck operation for a brand new face!

Level 11
Bigger is better! Have a breast operation

Level 17
There is a billionaire on vacation . . . You must catch his eye and his love! Good luck!

No, the Bobsey Twins were never like this.

Nicholas Jacquart, the creator of this hell-site, argues that the game teaches children about the real world and is simply harmless fun. After all, the site cautions children that though they will naturally want "to keep your bimbo waif thin," nevertheless every girl needs to eat "every now and again." It suggests feeding characters to prevent them from dying of starvation. Would you be surprised that Jacquart admits his site was created by men, and that no authorities on child development, eating disorders or psychology were consulted? No, you say?

Yecchh.

There are certainly more irresponsible and dangerous websites around, but few more sinister in their form and target audience than this one.
