September 2007 Unethical Websites

Blogactive

A website doesn't get much more unethical than Blogactive, the creation of self-righteous gay avenger Michael Rogers. Blogactive made the news when its purported outing of Senator Larry Craig provided the backdrop to his airport mens room escapade and subsequent "I'm guilty, no I'm not guilty; I resign, no I don't resign" act. Rogers believes that it is fair and right to expose closeted gay politicians who do not support gay causes. And, though he doesn't exactly admit it, he is aware that the threat of outing by his sordid site can frighten gay politicians into voting his way out of fear. Yes, blogactive is a tool of extortion.

Rogers's rationale is that a gay conservative is a hypocrite by definition. His logic is flawed. There are homosexuals who, for any number of reasons including religious beliefs, believe homosexuality is wrong. They have a right to that belief, and they have a right to employ that belief in their legislative decisions if they get elected to office. And if they do, they have the right to keep their private life as private as they wish.

Just as a straight politician can rationally choose to support gay rights, a gay politician is not necessarily being hypocritical to oppose measures favored by most gays. Persuasive social arguments can be made against gay marriage and hate crime legislation, for example. Personally, I don't agree with the arguments against gay marriage (though I think the concept of a hate crime is unconstitutional), but that doesn't give me the right to destroy people who make them.

In Rogers doctrinaire world, however: if you don't support these things, you deserve to be punished…your marriage wrecked, your career damaged. So he exposes on-line what should be absolutely private for every American, gay, straight, or not in tune with Ayatollah Rogers' determination of what constitutes right thinking.

Now that he's demonstrated that he requisite ethics deficit to wreck the reputations and lives of those he deems "hypocrites," Rogers is inflated with delusions of grandeur. "When will they learn?" he writes arrogantly in a current post. "Someone ought to tell Congressmen that when I leave a message, it's probably in their best interest to call me back. I didn't get the callback today... Now I have to put up a story tomorrow." Oooh, tremble in fear, you hypocrites…Michael Rogers is on the phone! Better promise to toe the line, or else!

Who does this creep think he is? The Scoreboard knows who he is: he's an unscrupulous, mean-spirited and Machiavellian bully who practices intimidation rather than persuasion, a direct descendant of Sen. Joe McCarthy. And Rogers is the real hypocrite, a supposed champion of gay rights who doesn't believe that gay people have the same right as straights to have whatever political opinion they choose, and not to have to fear that their most private secrets will be used to humiliate and intimidate them.
