| Unethical Website of the Month April 2006
Is there a more unethical motivation than revenge? The ultimate embodiment of a reverse-ethical impulse, revenge turns the Golden Rule right on its head: "Do Unto Others As They Did Unto You," or worse, "Do Unto Others So They Regret What They Did Unto You," or most insidious of all, "Do Unto Others So They Never Do Anything To Anyone Again." "Revenge Unlimited" is a chillingly named website that encourages and facilitates revenge by offering such products for sale as "Fart Spray," "The Shock Pen," and "Pepper Gum," and publications like "Screw Unto Others" and "Tenant's Revenge." It's small-bore nastiness, for the most part…one of the site's specialties is the delivery of dead and rotting bouquets of flowers…but revenge is nothing to fool with. This is an ancient and primitive human impulse that has started wars, spurred terrorism, given vent to cruelty, spread violence, prolonged feuds, and generally kept human beings hurting each other since the dawn of time. It has ravaged cities, families and nations, killed and maimed and caused untold sorrow to families and innocents. It has cost humanity billions and billions of dollars and hours that could have been used to make the world better, instead of making it meaner, angrier and more bitter. There is a clear, unbroken link from the Shock Pen to the suicide bomber, and though it is a long journey from one to the other, no person or website that sets out to pave the road of revenge can be called anything but unethical to the core.
